Usnea cornuta Körb.

  Thallus shrubby-erect to straggly-decumbent, 3–7 cm long, pale green to grey-green; branching subdichotomous to irregular, sympodial; trunk pale or black; branches terete; primary branches swollen, irregular, to 1.5 mm wide; secondary branches 0.5–1.0 mm wide, sometimes swollen, often slightly fusiform and articulated at branch junctions; apices tapered; branchlets on secondary and tertiary branches often numerous, dense, short; fibrils mainly in basal parts, moderately numerous, long, not dense; papillae usually on all branches. Isidia absent to sparse, some in pseudocyphellae, infrequent on primary and secondary branches, sparse to dense on tertiary branches and branchlets; pseudocyphellae few on main branches, numerous on tertiary branches and branchlets, punctiform, concave, often clustered, sometimes coalescing to produce large planar pseudocyphellae, or some slightly raised, not wart-like, orbicular, often arising from papillae; soralia absent. Cortex matt to somewhat glassy in appearance, thick. Medulla arachnoid to moderately dense; axis 1/4–1/3 width of branch, hyaline. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K+ yellow → red: containing salazinic acid (major) and constictic acid or consalazinic acid, or salazinic acid (major) and galbinic acid, or salazinic acid (minor) and fumarprotocetraric acid (minor), or salazinic acid (minor), galbinic acid (minor) and protocetraric acid (trace), or norstictic acid (major), galbinic acid (major), diffractaic acid (major) and salazinic acid (trace).
     
  Occurs in well-lit situations at rainforest margins and up to elevations of 1000 m in south-western W.A., Qld, N.S.W., Vic. and Tas. Also in Japan, Taiwan and Sabah (Malaysia).
